If you have been injured or lost a loved one in a motorcycle accident caused by another driver, a motorcycle defect, or unsafe roads or hazards, you may be able to file a personal injury or wrongful death claim in Missouri.

Motorcycle accidents can lead to catastrophic injuries. As Missouri motorcycle riders know all too well, car and truck drivers will frequently not give a motorcycle rider the same respect that they give operators of other vehicles. Motorcycle riders have the same legal right to operate on the highways and roadways in the State of Missouri as other licensed vehicles.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Commission publishes statistics about motorcycle accidents.  According to the most recent data (published in June 2014), 4,957 motorcyclists were killed and 93,000 motorcyclists were injured nationwide in 2012.   Per vehicle mile traveled, motorcyclists were more than 26 times more likely than passenger car occupants to die in a traffic accident.  Most fatal motorcycle accidents involve another vehicle, and most of these accidents involved a crash with a vehicle in front of the motorcycle.  Motorcyclists were much less likely to be killed when they were struck from behind.  Motorcycles were more likely to be involved in fatal collisions with fixed objects as compared to other vehicles.  In 41% of these fatal crashes, the other vehicles were turning left while the motorcycles were going straight, passing, or overtaking another vehicle.

Helpful motorcycle information can be found at The Motorcycle Safety Foundation, which publishes a Motorcycle Operator Manual. This Manual discusses what steps you should take to prepare to ride, riding within your abilities, being in shape to ride, and earning your license.

Missouri motorcycle riders also can take advantage of one of the nine Missouri Motorcycle Safety Program’s training courses offered at 31 locations throughout the State of Missouri.  These motorcycle safety courses train the novice and experienced rider on how to decrease the chance of being involved in a motorcycle accident.

These Missouri Motorcycle Safety Programs also stress that all riders should take a motorcycle safety class before carrying a passenger.  Motorcycle handling and braking distances are affected when a passenger is added to the motorcycle.  The motorcycle operator needs to have the skills and training necessary to keep his or her passenger safe.  Operating a motorcycle without being trained in how to avoid an accident is a gamble at best.
